FAQ's
We recommend wearing comfortable sportswear such as soccer jerseys, shorts, long soccer socks (if possible), and cleats. Tennis shoes are ok, however, cleats are preferred. We also highly recommend shin guards (to be worn underneath socks for added protection).
Please bring plenty of water and apply sunscreen prior to the class. Hats are fine to wear whilst playing if needed.
Snacks are ok, but please refrain from snack time until after class.
A seat for you and any other spectators is recommended.
We offer jerseys (and more!) for sale on our website – Click For Store
With the situation concerning the global pandemic developing constantly, we will be following guidelines set by State and local governments. Currently, masks are not required for outdoor sports groups and venues as stated by California and local guidelines. HOWEVER, if you would like your child to stay masked up during practice, that is not a problem. If you would like our coaches to also wear a mask during practices, please email matt@socalyouthsports.com prior to the class and be sure to speak to your coach at practice.
Public classes are limited to 8 children. We do occasionally allow exceptions and are happy to be flexible. Private Group Classes have participation limits set by the parents involved in leading the group. If you have any questions regarding this, please email matt@socalyouthsports.com.
Classes will not take place if any of the following extreme weather conditions occur:
- Forecasts of 100° F or higher
- AQI in the red zone (as provided by AirNow – EPA Air Quality App)
- Extreme rainfall on the day, leaving the surface unsafe
- Lightning and hail storms
- Extreme snowfall
- Winds which would cause class to become a dangerous environment
You will be contacted prior to your scheduled class in the event of any of the above weather conditions and we will work with each family to arrange a replacement class.
Our classes are tailored for each child and group. Our advice is the following:
-
- If you are looking to take your first steps into a sport or want flexibility in which class you attend, our Public Classes are perfect for you and your family.
- If you are looking for something more specific and tailored to you and would like to choose who is in your class, our Private Group Classes are the best option. This option is fantastic for:
- An after-school club
- A pod group activity
- Homeschooling groups
- Extra training outside of a club sport
- For the older, more experienced children looking for even greater detail and personable experiences, our Individual Classes would be a great choice for you. You can sign up on your own or share the time slot with a like-minded friend of similar ability. Whether you are looking for position-specific coaching (i.e. goalkeeping training, etc.) or if you want more technical work with a friend, these classes are your best bet.
Classes are absolutely co-ed. We are happy to support you and your child in any way possible. If you would like a gender specific group please consider requesting a Private Group Class
We do not believe in having a ‘check box’, objective-based curriculum for our classes. However, we do follow a class framework to ensure your child is getting the best experience. The framework delivers a personal experience for each child where each class is tailored to their age, stage and ability. For more on our DNA click here.
We believe development is cyclical, objective driven process. No child is the same. Whether it is learning the violin, playing soccer, or chess, children develop physically, technically, emotionally, and socially at different rates. Therefore having ‘Levels of Play’ is unnecessary and inappropriate in our setting of small personal groups. If you want more specificity with classmates and experienced players, creating your own private group is the way to go.
Your role as a parent, with any educational endeavor, is crucial. Developing skills and understanding doesn’t just happen in classes, it is continuous and starts at home. Our coaches are more than happy to suggest and support outside of class.
The classes themselves are intentionally chaotic to ensure each child is making their own decisions, developing creative and critical thinking. Research suggests this approach supports development, understanding, and skill acquisition. Having a guided, reflective, question and answer based approach, we understand that we ask a lot of the children. We know, in the early stages, there is going to be as much failure as success. This is where learning takes place.
We ask our parents are to be involved with this process. Asking the simple, ‘who, what, why, when, where’ questions are the best tools to support your child and their understanding as opposed to directive instructions such as ‘pass it, dribble, shoot.’
