Welcome to the SoCal Youth Sports Highlight Reel, a monthly segment highlighting one child from our program on their journey from their first class to the latest class.
The Highlight Reel aims to celebrate a child not only for their on-field progression and successes, but also for embodying the core values and outcomes of our program, Character, Courageousness, Curiosity and Creativity
Logan Kim
Highlight Reel – May 2021
1st Edition – Logan Kim
As one of the longest members of the program, Logan Kim fully embodies what it means to be part of SoCal Youth Sports. He has become a big character in our classes and he is enthusiastic and curious. Whether it is building his own remote control car or video game, Logan has a hunger to know and do more! He is constantly asking why, attempting how, and ploughing through any obstacles on the way of his own success. It is this curiosity and this consistent display of courageousness (Brains + Bravery) in every challenge he has set that has really begun to shine through from when we first met.
He takes this curiosity for the world into his soccer classes. In recent weeks, we have been looking at how we can move the ball to targets, over or around obstacles, and how to strike the ball differently for each problem given to him. Logan often thinks about the problems he faces in his normal life, like with building his video game, and creates solutions. He enjoys exploring his creativity to solve his problems in our 1v1 games. He is regularly able to not only imitate and copy cat ideas shown to him, but he is also able to adapt, add, and create new solutions for each new problem that comes up in our games. At times, this is off the cuff and within the moment of the game! Logan gets a spark of brilliance. Other times, it is the creation and use of some of our solutions we have developed over time, like our ball striking variations. Logan is great at creating his own solutions and honing in on little details to help him succeed. He also has the bravery to repeatedly try and explore new options even after he fails. Brains and bravery are what we call courageousness.
Logan has demonstrated that his courageousness is not just limited to on-the-field practices, but also off-the-field situations. It is his understanding that his learning of the game doesn’t start and end with just him. It is about everyone around him. In our classes, in the last 3-4 weeks in particular, I have seen Logan take on a role of support for his classmates and build on the ideas of what it means to be a good classmate, a good character.
Logan is a strong character, a quiet leader, readily happy to escape his comfort zone, and shows real grit and tenacity when the challenges he faces are tough. Even in adversity, Logan remains considerate of everyone around him. When classmates are trying to find their own way through their challenges, he is open minded enough to adapt and show empathy to help others learn and find their success. This empathy is crucial for any person to grow. Logan continually grows his understanding what it is like to be in the shoes (cleats) of others and that their successes look and feel very different.
For all these reasons, and more, Logan Kim is the first child on the SoCal Youth Sports Highlight Reel. Well done, Logan! Keep up the good work on the field, at school, and at home!
