Highlight Reel - October 2021 - Rosie Washburn

Welcome to the SoCal Youth Sports Highlight Reel,  a monthly segment highlighting one child from our program on their journey from their first class to the latest class.

The Highlight Reel aims to celebrate a child not only for their on-field progression and successes, but also for embodying the core values and outcomes of our program, Character, Courageousness, Curiosity and Creativity

Highlight Reel – October 2021

4th Edition – Rosie Washburn

Rosie Washburn has been with us for over a year now before SoCal Youth Sports was even SoCal Youth Sports. A very bright and bubbly child, it has been an absolute pleasure watching Rosie grow and excel over the last few months in particular.

Rosie joined us with a number of friends in Pasadena during the height of lockdown looking for some extra activity and to burn off all of that extra energy not being spent on the playground during recess.

Very often the only girl in class Rosie’s character really stands her out as a child. Always warm and welcoming when she comes to class, she is always looking to help and encourage her classmates, often dragging the boys into action and pushing everyone to play harder and faster.

Rosie shows courageousness in a number of ways whilst playing. Not only up for the physical battle, Rosie’s courageousness extends beyond being physically brave, she is brave in the decisions she makes and how insistent she is on using her intellect. She has a real drive to develop and apply the tactics, decisions and skills she learns in our games. She knows how to create and use spaces to keep and progress the ball forward. Even when it doesn’t work out, she takes what she’s learnt and isn’t shy to try again. She has developed a wonderful understanding of how to use her body to protect the ball and to win the ball back. Rosie is a real big fan of using a “scissor” and a “drag back”, or as she would put it a “see you later” as 2 major solutions to her problems in her games. This is something we were delighted to see her take into her AYSO games this season. It is a testament to her character, courageousness and creativity on the ball in every practice, to take skills shown to her by her peers or coach Matt to then use them so often and so well in a completely different context.

Anyone can work and practice skills against a cone but not many are courageous enough or have an innate creativity and curiosity to put these solutions into action when it matters and where there is the most jeopardy.

Rosie is an absolute delight to work with and is more than worthy of being highlighted this month. Well done Rosie, keep it going, and yes we will play “No Man’s Land” this week. Check out some of what Rosie has been doing the last few weeks below
