Parent Tip of the Week - getting More Touches

Parent Tip of the Week: More Touches Matter

Young players learn best when they are active, involved, and making decisions. That sounds simple, but it is one of the biggest differences between a helpful youth soccer session and one where kids spend too much time standing in lines.

At SoCal Youth Sports, we use Nano Sided Games and game-based activities to keep players moving, thinking, and touching the ball more often. Instead of waiting for one turn in a long drill, players are placed in smaller games where they get repeated chances to dribble, pass, shoot, defend, and solve problems.

Why it matters:

  • More touches help players build confidence faster.
  • More decisions help players understand the game.
  • More play keeps kids engaged and excited to come back.

This is especially important for young players. When the game feels fun, active, and manageable, kids are more likely to learn, improve, and develop a long-term love for soccer.

Whether its a soccer ball, a sponge ball or a tennis ball help your child get on the ball as much as possible and support the development at practice and at home!
