Team USA Knocked Out – FIFA World Cup Update
The US Men’s National Team have been knocked out of the World Cup at the round of 16
In what was a brave performance from one of the youngest and inexperienced teams in the competition the USA fell just short of their goal of reaching the quarter finals. The Netherlands experience of tournament soccer and big games in general showed against the plucky under dogs and went through with a 3-1 victory.
Team USA had started very brightly but continued the trend of creating chances without punishing teams and scoring more goals continued. The Netherlands on the other hand were ruthless when errors in defending occurred, they pounced and promptly punished the USA.
With an unfit Christian Pulisic and Weston Mckennie the task was always going to be huge for the USA. The Netherlands boasting a strong if unspectacular team full of Champions League regulars. An early chance for Pulisic could have lead to the first goal and change the momentum of the game but he could only scuff his shot into the goalkeeper after some positive USA build up play.
It was a run form Denzel Dumfries and a cut back to unlikely goal scorer Daley Blind to set up the Netherlands first goal, Daley then going to celebrate with assistant coach and father (Danny) on the sideline.
Dumfries set up a second for Barcelona’s Memphis Depay after some slack defending again from the USA. The USA did manage to pull one back and scrambled looking for an equalizer before the Dutch added a third without really getting out of second gear.
Despite two teams looking closely locked in battle and systems it was the individual quality that really shone for the Netherlands. A huge improvement for the USA to qualify and demonstrate and real ability to play at times. We have seen a hug step away from the kick and rush, “we will try and run more than you” soccer seen at previous tournaments. Players are developing but the development of high quality individuals needs to continue from top to bottom, back to front from grassroots to the elite in the USA for it to compete on the worlds top stage.
With the 2026 now on the horizon for all 3 of the host nations, USA, Canada & Mexico, preparation begins to attempt to be the first North American country to win soccer’s most prestigious prize, returning to the continent for the first time since 1994!
