Small games give children more of the game

More opportunities to be part of the game.

When you watch your child play soccer, you want to see them involved. Having a go. Finding a teammate. Recovering after losing the ball. Enjoying the moment when something works.

A touch. A decision. Another chance to try.

Look for involvement

That is why small games are central to how we coach at SoCal Youth Sports.

With fewer players sharing the game, there are more opportunities for each child to take part. They have chances to attack and defend, decide whether to dribble or pass, and discover how their choices affect what happens next.

How our coaches shape the game

We call this the NanoSoccer approach: less is more.

Our coaches can adjust the space, goals or rules to create a challenge that fits the group. A child learns in a game where the decision matters, with support when they need it.

What might parents notice? A child asking for the ball. Trying a turn. Looking up for a teammate. Choosing to try again after a mistake. Progress can look different for every player.

Bring that experience into winter

Our first full winter league brings this approach to children aged 4½–12 at ISANA Octavia Academy. Beginners and returning players are welcome.

The December 1, 2026 to February 6, 2027 season includes one weekly practice and game during active weeks, a shirt and an optional second weekly practice for an additional $100. We pause December 20 through January 4 for the holidays.

At the next game, look beyond the score. Notice whether your child finds space, recovers after losing possession or asks for the ball again. Those moments give you something specific to talk about on the way home.

Our approach draws on Teaching Games for Understanding, Game Sense and the constraints led approach. In practice, coaches can change the space, goals or rules, observe the response and help players explore another solution.
